Documentary Subject: The Story of Making a Virtual Relationship a Real One

Logline:  The Story of Making a Virtual Relationship a Real One

Tagline:  From Role Play to Real Life

Documentary
Style: Realist / Formalist (shots inserted and used as audio for B reel)

Overall, the story of Jonah and Rachel is told, through the unfolding of their meeting through a virtual world, but as two very real people. Living in two different states, love can be anywhere; and can work only if you are willing to let it. It is their normal. It's their beginning.

Themes shown in poster are based from conversations with subjects, revolving from how they met.

The text/typography used in the Logline is from the PC, RPG game "runeScape"; as is the computer monitor image (representing male documentary subject), and female character (symbolizing the main female interview subject) / photoshop upgrade treatment applied.

The poster is additionally conceived with the world of online gaming and independent film style in mind. Meaning, telling a lot of story with key iconic imagery.

How do you plan to edit this video:

How will you structure the footage to tell the story?
Book-ending the formalist footage (then interjecting it only throughout the narrative).  We will be however, telling the majority of the documentary through scenes that emulate their  story (ie. meeting in a common area in the game = a common area in life/footage).

Direct cuts or transitions / Do you plan to add any titles or effects?
Using titles and visual transitions (ie. fades, direct cuts) making use of visual overlay (from the formalist interview).

  1. very sweet story, interesting topic, some odd things going on with the footage and some b roll was repeated. Other than that great job.

  2. I liked the story, and the direction of the video. It really gives you a feel for how they met and came together as a couple.

  3. I liked how personal your doc. was, it made it a lot more interesting to watch. You tackled a difficult subject because of the content being online and her living in a different state so props to you because it turned out really cohesive!

  4. The content covered was very wide and personal. It all fit together cohesively.

My only critique is that there is so much going on in the beginning graphic-wise and it begins to lose me, but it picks up and gets a lot more stable and laid back

  5. the subject matter is interesting and was handled with care. some of the editing was a tad confusing and some camera shots are off center, maybe a multi-cam set-up would help out. overall, great job!

  6. I liked the subject matter of the interview and how it seems to try and break the stereotypes that are pre-existing within society. I just wish that some of the footage was a little smoother and that the gameplay and such was captured better. I also feel like the repition of how online dating wasn't something bad drove the point home, however became a little overused at points, and could've been maybe cut once or twice. Overall a good documentary barring the corruption of the audio and such, which is no fun.

  7. I really love all of the footage from the game on the computer screen. I feel like that would be difficult to capture due to glares and things like that, so very nicely done. You could really see the connection between you guys. One question I would have loved to see answered would have been "what was it like when you met in person for the first time?" I think that would have been neat and tied together the theme of the video.

  8. Very sweet story! I like how you used the game footage and skype as your b-roll. It shows how your friendship started and what your daily lives consist of. There were some inconsistencies in both the shots and the audio. I know it was probably hard for you guys to get more footage of you actually together, but I would have liked to have seen more of your interacting other than on the couch.

  9. I like the story that was told and that we heard from both people in the relationship. The b roll shots were also pretty good

  10. I really like how personal this video was. I thought the clips alternating from one another worked well. I also liked how you added in the virtual world while they are live chatting. The interview shots were good, and I liked how you had the banner at the bottom with their names, that was cute. The sound voice was louder in other parts. Overall I thought the group did very well sticking to their pitch. Great job!

  11. Very interesting video. I really liked the subject that you chose to cover. Nothing that was said felt unneeded, and overall it flowed really well. That being said there were some editing issues I had with it. I noticed there was some footage that was used more than once, not a big deal but it was noticeable. The audio clips were all over the place in terms of volume. Lastly there were some shots that I felt didn't need to be shown at the time they were (e.g. shot of boots, that didn't make sense to me; also Rachel would pop up on the screen over gameplay footage when she wasn't even mentioned; things like that). Aside from those things, I really liked this video, great job!

  12. Nice video. The concept for it is really interesting. I also thought there were some very cool shots that were taken. I think my biggest issue was with the audio which wasn't really your fault.
